Welcome to the Caligari Film Club
@ the Department of Germanic Studies. We hope to screen a wide variety
of entertaining films that may serve as a complement to your studies
at the Department but will also, hopefully, be of interest to anyone
with a passion for film. We’ll mostly be screening German
films (which the Department has been steadily acquiring over the
last year), and, in keeping with the Department’s profile,
will show some Austrian, Dutch and Swedish films too.
The films are intended to introduce you to German
film, which, despite a few notable exceptions, has rarely made any
impact on the British audiences. The choice will be eclectic, drawing
from a wide range of styles, periods and genres: we’ll screen
titles considered masterpieces in the history of film-making, films
made under the aegis of the NS dictatorship, films from the GDR,
examples of “New German Cinema”, Unification comedies,
modern thrillers, horror films, East German sci-fi films and German-Turkish
gangster flicks.
Generally, the films will be shown every two weeks
on Wednesday afternoons, when there is no guest seminar and are
open to all (though not all will have English subtitles). The films
will be beamed onto the large pull-down screen in the media room.
There probably won’t be any popcorn or hotdogs but the Deutsche
Verein and the Department have offered to provide post-screening
refreshments.
If you would like to make any suggestions or comments
or have questions send me an email, or see Nick in the Postgrad.
Office in the Department. We hope you enjoy the forthcoming season
and look forward to seeing you at the Caligari Film Club.
